What is an Adventure Park?
Adventure Parks continue to be a large area of growth within the outdoor adventure sector. Adventure Park courses and facilities are primarily designed for use as a recreational product and often run as a “pay-to-play” adventure experience by commercial operators. Aimed at challenging participants physically and mentally, users navigate through a series of elements and in some locations also zip wires. Adventure Park courses are usually more of a self-led/guided activity experience operating using an individual safety system under the supervision of an instructor as opposed to being an instructor-led activity using an assisted belay system.
BS EN 15567: 2015 categorises individual safety systems from A to E depending on the connecting components in the safety system. Each of the following provide adequate levels of safety when used in combination with appropriate supervision, training, instruction and information.
Self-Belay System: participants required to clip and unclip around the ropes course using connectors which are either not automatically self-locking (Category A) or are self-locking (Category B).
Interactive Safety System: participants required to clip and unclip around the ropes course using lanyards which are designed to ‘reduce the likelihood’ (Category C) or ‘prevent’ (Category D) unintentional detachment from the ropes course. These systems use ‘keys’ or magnets installed around the ropes course belay wire.
Continuous Belay System: Participants attached at the start of the ropes course and cannot remove the safety system until the end of the course unless during a rescue where the safety system would be removed by a rescuer using a special tool (Category E).
Who is this training course for?
The ERCA Adventure Park Instructor course is aimed at teaching the skills required to work in a ropes course centre as an ‘instructor’ and provides candidates with an overview of the theoretical background of the ropes course and adventure parks sector.
The main responsibilities of an Adventure Park Instructor are to equip, instruct and supervise users of a ropes course. The content of the training course is designed around providing candidates with the knowledge and skills to be able to do this competently.

What to Expect
The ERCA Adventure Park Instructor training course will cover the topics as outlined within the ERCA Training Syllabus through a combination of both theoretical and practical sessions.
There are 2 assessments on this training course: a written exam and a practical assessment covering delivery of an adventure park session.
On successful completion of the course, candidates will be awarded with a certificate from the European Ropes Course Association (ERCA). The certificates will note the type of safety systems used on the ropes course.
