What are Traditional High Ropes Courses?
Traditional high ropes courses typically use a roped belay system where participants belay each other on the activities (assisted belay systems) under the supervision of a trained and qualified instructor. These types of ropes courses are primarily designed for developmental or educational purposes with elements being constructed in trees, on poles and sometimes from existing structures (e.g. inside buildings/barns), either as stand-alone activity elements or as part of a multi-activity structure.
These traditional high ropes courses would typically have elements such as:

- Gladiator Challenge
- Crate Climbing
- High All Aboard
- Leap of Faith
- Traversing Elements
Who is this course for?
The Traditional High Ropes Instructor course is designed for individuals who operate or work at outdoor adventure centres or other facilities with these types of ropes courses or elements.
The main responsibilities of a Traditional High Ropes Course Instructor are to equip, instruct and supervise users of traditional-style ropes course elements. The content of the training course is designed around providing candidates with the knowledge and skills to be able to do this competently through both theoretical and practical sessions.

What to Expect
The ERCA Traditional High Ropes Instructor training course will cover the topics as outlined within the ERCA Training Syllabus through a combination of both theoretical and practical sessions.
There are 2 assessments on this training course: a written exam and a practical assessment covering delivery of a session on a high ropes course.
On successful completion of the course, candidates will be awarded with a certificate from the European Ropes Course Association (ERCA). The certificates will note the type of safety systems used on the ropes course.
These courses can be run at your own centre to enable correct familiarisation and association with equipment for your staff. Training courses will be geared to the specific requirements of your centre or ropes course facility to ensure that your staff have undergone robust, independent training will provide you with security and peace of mind. We will ensure that you have up to date awareness of industry regulations and how they affect you in addition to advice on maintenance, inspections and equipment.

General Requirements
- Minimum age: 18 years old
- Hold an in-date First Aid certificate
- Must be confident at height
- Good physical condition, able to partake in the activity
- At least one day prior experience on a high ropes course is required. This could be provided at the beginning of the training course.
